Senator Steiner oversees the entire Oregon state budget as Co-Chair of Ways & Means. Since 2018 when she became one of Oregon’s chief budget writers, Steiner has increased funding for critical services like healthcare and public education while preserving a balanced budget and growing Oregon’s reserves. Under her watch, she has prioritized smart investments in proven programs, including:

    • Investing hundreds of millions of dollars to build more affordable housing, support renters, and address Oregon’s homelessness crisis
    • Increasing funding for the Oregon Health Plan to extend health insurance coverage to every child in the state 
    • Adding over $2 billion more in education funding to boost investments for K-12 students, early learning programs, and behavioral and mental health support for students
Creating Oregon’s Paid Family and Medical Leave Program so that Oregonians can afford to take paid time off to care for themselves or loved ones
  • Investing $200 million for Future Ready Oregon workforce training across multiple sectors, creating a path to high-wage, high-demand industries and occupations.
  • Adding hundreds of millions of dollars worth of behavioral health investments to increase capacity at the Oregon State Hospital and address staffing shortfalls

Promoting A Healthier Oregon

Dr. Steiner ran for office with the goal of making Oregon the healthiest state in the nation. Using her over 30 years of experience as a family physician, she has championed numerous innovative policies and investments to support the health of Oregon children and families, including:

  • Raising the minimum age for selling tobacco products to age 21
  • Increasing transparency of prescription drug prices for Oregonians and finding ways to lower costs
  • Protecting access to reproductive health services as a champion of Oregon’s  Reproductive Health Equity Act
  • Fighting back against the Supreme Court ruling on abortion by expanding reproductive freedom in Oregon
